January 06, 2009 After receiving this "Pocket Consultant" I quickly realized that allot of the material covered was exactly what I was doing in XP and more recently in Vista Ultimate. The book, like the "XML Pocket Consultant" by the same author, has an excellent balance of technical reference and down to earth plain english elaboration on the topics of discussion.
This document will address areas that you will be familiar with, allowing you to assess what you know and how to formally apply and place that knowledge in the administrator role context, as well as introduce newer key concepts like bit locker. The book covers as much as possible in a set number of pages without fragmenting or obscuring the details.
The scope of systems administration is vast and thus the book really introduces what features are present, primarily the ones you truely need to know, and touches lightly on base with lesser complimentary features.
In conclusion, this document will get you established with: your current skill set, address fundamental administration taskings, help you gain an understanding of those taskings and their scope as well as domain of responsibility, assist you when applying what you know and what you'll be learning at the time in a realistic fashion; reference technical resources for further learning and topical investigation.
I have to state that I am becoming a fan of Mr. William Stanik. His writing style is concise, consistent, and has the flow of a seasoned grandfather's wisdom. Microsoft Press has a keeper in this one.
I highly recommend this "Pocket Consultant." It's easier to read than this review. So I would suggest, if you are interested in knowing Vista more deeply for any reason, that you get this one if it's the only one you buy on Vista Admin. Handy to have at hand,
November 19, 2008 I'm a big fan of stanek's pocket consultant guide series. Stanek knows Windows better than anyone else on the planet and better still, he's not afraid to share everything he knows in his books. Like his other books, the Vista pocket consultant is clear, concise, and packed with helpful advice. This is one you'll use and refer to often. Excellent book chock full of support advice!,
June 29, 2008 I love William Stanek's books. Like his others, every chapter and almost every section of Windows Vista Admin Pocket Consultant has helpful tips and advice for support and troubleshooting. The last 100 pages cover advanced, support and troubleshooting exclusively. A MUST have for admin and developers. No experience,
June 19, 2008 In the ideal operating system, there will be no problems to solve. This book is written for the such error-free OS. I decided to buy this publication because I needed to get some insight how the Vista works and how to solve daily problems. The whole book seems to me as the author mostly describes what he sees on the screen. With no additional insight, with no useful tips and trick, no internal principles explained or Vista concept mentioned in more deep.
I was looking for publication where the Vista OS topics are presented in more detail. This book has a label "Administrator pocket consultant". But if you would like to use this book while solving some Vista problem, forget it. The book can be used as the monitor stand, maybye. At least, the size of this book is okay. The Best,
June 11, 2008 I purchased Stanek's XP Pro Pocket Consultant and found it to be an immeasurable help in my work with an XP OS. Now I find myself servicing more Vista machines and once again Stanek's Vista Pocket Consultant has be an immeasurable help. The book is an easy read and comprehensive. Filled with facts that show you how to get a Vista machine (stand-alone or Domain) installed and configured, using reference tables, instructions, list,etc... Definitely a handy book to have. Every Vista tech should include this book in his/her Vista library.
